Home » December 2025: The End of Analogue Services

Glossary of Terms:

PSTN = Public Switched Telephone Network which refers to basic wireline telecommunication connection i.e. conventional point to point phone systems routed over copper cables.

ISDN = Integrated Services Digital Network is the main means of making and receiving business phone calls supporting multiple channels. It is a set of communication standards for simultaneous digital transmission of voice, video, data, and other network services over the digitalised circuits of the public switched telephone network i.e. the traditional copper network.

The Great Switch Off

Along with every other provider Wizards cannot now provide new ISDN and PSTN services and at some point will announce dates when these services must be terminated. At which point if you seek to retain the numbers they must be converted to VoIP.

ISDN was introduced in the 1980s and has been a highly reliable technology. In keeping with the rest of the global market BT OpenReach have concluded it is too costly to support and has decided the entire ISDN and PSTN networks will be retired by December 2025 at the latest.

This retirement process was announced by BT OpenReach in 2017 and has now reached the point where ISDN and PSTN services are not being renewed and instead numbers are being ported to VoIP services delivered over broadband. We have many options including conversion to broadband of all flavours including SoGEA and the provision of VoIP services.
