How @wizardsLtd Hosted VoIP Means Greater Availability Of Your Office Phone Systems

Office phone systems are based on PBX (private branch exchange) systems which have been based on ISDN (Integrated Services Digital Network) since the late 1980s but are now rapidly moving toward VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) with the drivers being:

  • VoIP technology is mature and reliable.
  • ISDN PBX systems are aging, increasingly costly to maintain and based on cumbersome software that will not be updated, easily expanded or shrunk.
  • VoIP delivers dramatic cost of ownership reductions vs ISDN with ISDN charges often exceeding calls charges on a per month basis.
  • BT are retiring the ISDN network in 2025 with no new orders after 2020 delivering a compelling reason to make the move now.
  • Being more recently developed VoIP systems have far more features as standard, are simple to manage and can be expended (or shrunk) more easily than ISDN PBXs.
  • VoIP PBX systems require little in the way of computing “power” so can be run on cheap machines which may even be otherwise unused surplus, superseded hardware. Given the traditional approach to having your PBX run on your own “black box” in your office this seems superficially tempting. The restriction here is should your internet connection fail you are completely without phones; calls cannot be made or received while that connection is down.

Another option is to run the PBX in the “cloud”, which means you are paying for telephony as a service with your provider (@wizardsLtd obviously!) maintaining the system carrying out all updates to the software without your intervention plus maintaining the availability of the system at all times. This delivers telephony as a utility service like power or water, billed on a per use basis without the burden of owning, maintaining or replacing the supporting hardware or software or requirement for the expertise to do so.

There are many choices of cloud provider on the market and we will host with the provider of your choice. @wizardsLtd default choice is the Google Compute Engine; there are many reasons for this; mainly that quality of the network and data centres delivering high quality service with outages to date.

Here diagrammatically is how hosting in the cloud works:The main value of @wizardsLtd telephony as a service is @wizardsLtd set the soft PBX up so that should any of your internet connections fail, calls made into the system fail over to other numbers, usually mobiles meaning you continue to trade receive calls while your connection is down. Smartphone apps and 4G connections mean you can continue to make calls through the PBX meaning customers and suppliers see no change in the service.

In this way @wizardsLtd hosted VoIP delivers increased availability of your office phone system on top of reduced bills versus on site ISDN PBX systems.
