Satellite Internet and 4G Internet Access

Satellite Internet

Satellite Internet and 4G Internet technologies have been around for a few years and have always been seen as an “exotic” choice for web access. This is due to price and perception of price and both will continue to command a price premium vs everyday terrestrial services. Of late however prices have dramatically fallen and both now have a place as part of your Internet access options. We will illustrate where that is and how they can be used effectively and economically in your business.

Satellite Internet

Requiring only an easy to fit dish and suitable router, Satellite Internet is surprisingly straightforward to install and use.

Whether hosted in the exchange or across using part of their fibre, with a handful of exceptions, Internet access in the UK is delivered at least in part using the BT Openreach network. Satellite Internet allows you to stand outside of that network completely using your own dish accessing geostationary satellites. Satellite Internet is reliable with very little downtime usually only for scheduled satellite repairs. Speeds vary with the rates up to 30Mbps download and upload 2Mbps. Data plans are capped on a usage per month basis with warnings about data use and significant charges should you exceed monthly data allowances. On the plus side even plans with relatively low monthly data limits can include night time allowances giving unlimited data (subject to fair use) between 01:00 and 06:00.

Satellite Internet works best subject to the following:

  • Redundant Connection: Support terrestrial connections meaning you have connectivity should the BT Openreach network become unavailable (exchange burns down, digger through your main Internet connection etc).
  • Lease line prohibitively expensive
  • Supplimentary Connection: more bandwidth available on demand
  • Outside of the BT Openreach network.
  • No chance of an FTTC connection.

4G Internet

Cheaper than satellite, 4G Internet is surprisingly simple, easy to use and affordable. Requiring only a suitable router equipped with a data only SIM, 4G Internet can be used almost anywhere a mobile phone signal can be found. That router can easily deliver other services including terrestrial broadband and routing with 4G Internet there to take up when all else fails. Again, 4G Internet data is capped on a per month basis with warnings about data use and significant charges should you exceed the monthly data allowances, but the price/Gb is far lower than losing Internet access, email, VoIP phones, accounting systems, CRM etc.

4G Internet works best subject to the following:

  • Redundant Connection: Support terrestrial connections meaning you have connectivity should the BT Openreach network become unavailable (exchange burns down, digger through your main Internet connection etc).
  • Lease line prohibitively expensive
  • Supplimentary Connection: more bandwidth available on demand
  • Outside of the BT Openreach network.
  • No chance of an FTTC connection.
